My brother sent me this YouTube video today about India’s street dentists. Those familiar with the wonderful nation on the subcontinent will not be surprised by the special services offered by these pavement workers. While others might be put off by the men’s basic work with files and pliers despite previous work experience that includes fixing bicycles.

The movie comes complete with a Hindi music soundtrack. Run time is 4:40.

While not meaning to horrify people with the video or condemn or condone the treatments offered, it’s certainly worth noting what people in other parts of the world may need to go through for dental or health treatments.

Here are some of the comments below the video worth thinking about:

Personally, I can’t think there is anything wrong with this man helping people. Their immune systems are pretty strong as they are used to fighting off germs and infections all the time. If they did not have him – a rotten tooth left in the mouth would be soon a life threatening condition. I reckon he actually saves alot of lives as well as making many people smile again.

It is unprofessional and unacceptable, and as a dentist I have to say that. BUT under that poverty condition, nothing is right and wrong anymore. We’re talking about survival here, so screw professional conduct. If you’re not born in a 3rd world country, thank god for that in the first place. Coz human rights are not preserved at all in 3rd world country.

Man, I can hardly wait to get a root canal or an extraction from these two. Black and Decker hand me down drill motor, a couple of 1/64 bits and what the hell. He may even have some local snake juice as anesthetic. Heaven!!!
